WHY M2M
The M2M Project exists to unlock economic mobility through business ownership — the most direct path to stability, job creation, and lasting wealth when given the right supports and networks to succeed. We envision a future where business ownership is accessible and attainable for anyone with the skill and drive to build. In this future, local businesses don’t just participate in the economy — they help shape it. When ownership reflects the diversity and talent of our communities, growth becomes more inclusive, durable, and shared.
WHY THE SKILLED TRADES
M2M begins with family-owned, small skilled-trade businesses — a vital yet underutilized engine of New York City’s economy. Scaling these firms from small to mid-sized enterprises can significantly expand employment, revenues, and community wealth. By proving what’s possible in one industry and in one city, M2M offers a model for broader economic inclusion — showing how equipping small businesses to scale strengthens families, neighborhoods, and cities alike.
WHAT WE DO
The M2M mission is to leverage the skilled trade industry as a platform for economic mobility by helping underserved entrepreneurs to strengthen and grow their businesses. M2M combines education, mentorship, and partnership to help small contractors strengthen their businesses from the inside out. Through these efforts, M2M promotes skills development, job creation, economic inclusion, and wealth that stays rooted where it is earned.
Cathy Kim has spent more than twenty years designing and scaling initiatives that expand economic opportunity. A social impact entrepreneur and systems builder, she has led efforts to redesign how the New York City Housing Authority—the nation’s largest landlord—delivers community-based services; advanced rapid rehousing for families with children in the shelter system at Enterprise Community Partners; and built workforce and entrepreneurship programs that helped hundreds of women and food entrepreneurs launch and grow businesses throughout New York City. Her work focuses on creating practical pathways to mobility and removing structural barriers that limit opportunity. She specializes in coordinating cross-sector partnerships - public, private, and civic sectors - to build high-impact programs grounded in strong management and fiscal foundations. Cathy’s passion for business ownership as a pathway to economic mobility stems from her parents, immigrants who relied on their small trade and food businesses to keep their family afloat. She currently serves as Board President of Asian Americans for Equality (AAFE).
